Dog fighting- the reason why the huge misconception involving ‘Bully Breeds’ exists at all, trash websites (spreading half-truths to gain support for their cause) contribute to pit-fighting by spreading opinionated, one sided news, and usually the reason why a rare few of these normally very friendly dogs are aggressive toward humans at all.
The unfathomable number of dogs euthanized annually is bad enough, but to intentionally breed and train dogs to be abnormally aggressive- to violently kill each-other? That is perhaps the worst of animal cruelty.
That being said, as long as you have wealth and fame here in America, you can breed dogs to kill each-other for mere entertainment and all but get away with it. Back in 2007, the wealthy NFL quarterback Michael Vick was sentenced just under 2 years in prison, and fined close to one million dollars after 54 dogs were seized from his ‘Bad Newz Kennels’, an illegal interstate dog fighting ring, property. It may seem like an enormous amount, until you consider that not only is this only about year’s wages for him, he is currently back playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, under a 1 year, 970,000$ contract. He earned about 39 million playing for Eagles and the Jets, not including all the Millions he made from the Falcons prior to his sentencing.
The star was also noted to have hung and drown dogs having not performed well.
Hmm- so, he sure is still living the American Dream; most of us would gladly serve 2 years in any prison for that kind of wealth without question- that was no punishment. All the while, I wonder how many innocent (remember- they don’t know any better and are only acting naturally, having received specific training and instruction) dogs suffered and died violently under his care? Lets look at a few photos to bring this into perspective.
Note- dogs often bite out of insecurity; it is not the optimal choice. They usually prefer to flee a threat rather than confront it and risk death. If cornered, such as is the case with pit fighting, there is no other choice.
Just as often, bites stem from a misunderstanding, a failure to communicate. Visual cues will nearly always be given (after all, dogs can’t talk). It is not the dogs’ fault most human bite victims either don’t listen, or don’t know how to.
To put these many myths to rest, ‘Bully Breeds’ (Pitbulls, American Bully, Staffordshire Terrier, etc.) are normally very friendly toward humans (American Bullies especially, having been bred as a companion animal). In fact, studies have shown the avg. American Pitbull Terrier is more sociable then the avg. Labrador Retriever. There was a very specific reasoning for this trait, and it was selectively enhanced early in the lineages breeding history; handlers needed to be able to step in and care for their dogs’ injuries without being injured or killed themselves.
Just like it is possible for any animal to be aggressive, they can become aggressive toward people as well (although not a natural behavior). Over all, many toy breeds harbor a much higher level of aggression. Not weighing more than 15 pounds however, most people don’t consider this.
On a side note, in many instances dogs rescued from pit-fighting are considered dangerous and euthanized rather than rehabilitated. The case with M. Vick, having attracted so much media attention, was different; attempts were made to socialize 48 of the dogs, and many were adopted. Sadly, these are only a few of thousands, and a rarity.
