Tuesday, April 26, 2016- Emergency Veterinarians race to save the life of young Earl, a small red terrier-type dog, severely, senselessly beaten to the very verge of death by 24-year-old Zachary Ralston. When stopped by police, little Earl the dog ( estimated to be 12-18 months old, weighing less than 15 pounds) was found nearly beaten to death in the back seat of Ralston’s Ford Mustang at Valley River Center (a type of shopping center/mall).
According to Eugene police, 24-year-old Zachary Ralston was seen by a security guard at the Valley River Center choking, throwing, kicking and punching a small dog (Coin 6) just prior to 1 a.m..Upon inspection, Ralston was also found to be in possession of Meth and Heroin (possible reason’s for behavior). Ralston claims he was “watching the dog for a friend”.
Earl the Dog Struggles to Recover
Thursday, April 28, 2016- Earl the dog is transferred from emergency care to his new foster home. Having suffered Traumatic Brain Injury due to his tragic ordeal, police said it isn’t yet clear if Earl will recover.
Animal Services wants to thank everyone who has kept Earl the dog in their thoughts or donated towards his care. They said they no longer need donations. Officials at the hospital said enough money has been collected to cover the cost of his care and any additional care he might need. Thanks to the quick media response, overwhelming support has been shown in Earl’s case.
What Will Happen to Earl’s Abuser?
Zachary Ralston was arrested and jailed on charges of Aggravated Animal Abuse and Unlawful Possession of Heroin, and is currently lodged at the Lane County Jail.
