January, 2016- A furious New Jersey winter storm rages; temperatures plummet to dangerous depths. Residents huddle among the warmth their dwellings offer, unwilling to brave the dangerous elements. The coastal state is hit hard this time, as angry tides slam against supporting bulkheads, frigid Atlantic waters threatening to wash away what meager defenses they offer.
Winter Storm Jonas Bellows Her Fury
Two brave dogs, one injured and bleeding, somehow cling to life- with only each other for support- in a place where animals freezing to death isn’t the least bit uncommon. Winter Storm Jonas screams in unimaginable outrage, threatening to obliterate all in her path. So the battle for their very lives begins.
A Tale of Two Dogs
Thursday, Jan. 21st- just a day or two prior, two mixed- breed dogs were reportedly seen roaming Liberty State Park unattended; Braveheart and Faithful were their names. As if fate held resentment for past crimes, Braveheart suffered a bullet wound to the neck- thanks to one park official (I suppose they don’t carry sedatives, and aiming anywhere non-vital isn’t park-enforcement procedure).
The extent of Braveheart’s injuries seems all but impossible to confirm; where most sources simply say ‘shot’, I’ve came across one that said he was both shot in the neck and chest, and yet another claiming he was shot 3 times; once by a tranquilizer dart (although all three would seem a bit unnecessary).
Faithful’s Story Has A Happy Ending; Braveheart’s Isn’t Over
Try as I might, all news of Faithful after Feb. 20th seems to have disappeared. Hopes were strong that the two dogs would be adopted together, especially due to their miraculous story- but it seems that isn’t the case. After sifting through about 15 sources, I did manage to settle upon Braveheart’s Liberty Humane Society listing– he is still up for adoption! Sadly, or thankfully (depending on how you look at it), Faithful seems to have been adopted- and after all that….
Seems a bit odd, wouldn’t you think? Due to the media coverage these two got, I would imagine there are people out there that would pay significant costs to keep them together, but no such luck for the little Labrador mix who overcame such adversity. Braveheart is the black fella you see below, the one shot by said park official.
Thankfully, I was able to do the next best thing! If you care to sponsor Braveheart through Pet-finder, or donate toward Liberty Humane Society as a whole, you can using either of the two previous links. I can think of few guys more deserving!
Sadly, during my search, I’ve also came across news coverage of dogs who weren’t so lucky; it seems pets literally freezing to death is not at all uncommon. Apparently the humane society frequently releases pet- storm warnings, which always seem to be ignored. Point being- be conscious of your pets- they depend on you more than you can imagine.
If you would like, please help share Braveheart’s (adoption photo right) story through any of the many social media links on this page; help find him the loving home he deserves!
